A locavore is someone who tries to eat food that was produced close to where they live. Farm-To-Table might be another term you’ve heard of. This movement aims to reduce resources used to get food from the place where it was grown, to the place where it will be consumed. Eating locally grown food and produced food not only saves resources, it also supports local businesses. Also, often the food is fresher, higher quality and more tasty than that mass produced in far distant lands!
Oregon’s Willamette Valley has been home to a burgeoning farm-to-table movement since the early 90’s. More recently, the South Willamette Valley has been recognized as a locavore hot spot and even a food tourism destination in itself, and worthy of a place “on the map”, so to speak. The South Willamette Valley Food Trail recognizes businesses in our area that source a high percentage of their food and drinks locally. We are proud to be a location on this food trail map of the South Willamette Valley!
We value the sustainable and community-supportive practices of the farm-to-table movement. Those include growing relationships with neighboring farms, supporting local infrastructure and community organizations, and support of farming techniques that protect air, water and soil quality. These are things that we also try to foster as much as possible in our own business. For example, the foods from our kitchen are sourced from farms and producers that are just a short drive away, as much as we possibly can. We work with Singing Creek Farm, Hawley Ranch, Deterings Orchard, Thistledown Farm and others. We are always on the lookout for new local producers as well.
Come on down to the pub and pick up the map to see where else in the South Valley you can find local food, drinks and fun!
