Do you like your butter room temperature and spreadable, but dislike how fast it goes bad on the counter in a traditional butter dish? Then a butter bell might be exactly what you’re looking for!
A butter bell, sometimes called a butter crock, or a butter keeper, is a small, two-piece crock, usually ceramic or perhaps marble or another stone-type material. The bottom part of the crock you’ll fill with fresh, cold water. The top of the crock, or the lid, is bell shaped on the under side. That bell shaped portion you’ll fill with fresh, soft butter. When you place the bell butter-side down into the bottom part of the crock for storage, the water makes an air tight seal around the butter. Since it’s really the air that makes butter go bad the fastest, not the temperature, this air lock helps keep your butter fresh when stored on the counter and perfectly spreadable! Just change the water out every day or two and your butter will stay nice and fresh for much longer on the counter than it would otherwise.
If you’ve already got one, we applaud you! But please keep in mind that these also make wonderful gifts for any of your friends and family members who have a kitchen and love toast. 😉 We carry butter bells in a variety of colors to match almost any kitchen’s style, so come on down and check out our selection at the feed store!
