Peat Moss and Coconut Coir Fiber

February 28, 2022 by Coast Fork Blogger

Soil

Where’s the peat moss this year? Or how about the increasingly popular alternative to peat; coconut coir fiber? If you do a lot of gardening and potting-up of plants, you’ve probably noticed how hard it is to find these products. Again in the cases of both of these products, the availability issues are because of transportation and production issues.

Peat moss and coconut fiber are not commonly produced here in the US. Peat is mined from permafrost in the arctic (for the supply here in the US, that source is often Canada) and coconut fiber is primarily produced in tropical areas overseas, such as India and Sri Lanka. Supply chain and production issues caused by covid will mean we should expect some very long delays in delivery of these products, if we see them at all in stores here locally this year.

While we do have some limited supply of coconut coir fiber in the feed store right now, we do have other potting mediums and soil amendments that are more readily available and that may suit your needs well. You’re welcome to contact us online, give us a call, or just walk into the store to discuss peat and coconut fiber alternatives.
