Onion sets are some of the first garden plants that come into the feed store in the early spring. You’ll often find that onion sets and seed potatoes come into the store together sometime in March. These plants are “early” arrivals because they are frost hardy and can handle our bouts of cold, wet early spring weather here in the south Willamette Valley.
A little bit later on in the season you’ll find onion seed on the shelf when we get our seed order delivery. Some of our favorite onions to grow from seed are scallions and pearl onions, because they can often be harvested after a shorter amount of time for inclusion in those summertime salad recipes. (The larger varieties, like those tasty sweet yellow onions, are nice to get as sets so that they have a head start when you put them in the garden.)
