COAST FORK CHRONICLES
Oh, how quickly we sometimes forget.
In recent years, our summers have been marked by intense fire seasons, and our thoughts and best wishes always accompany the firefighters and other personnel that sacrifice so much to protect our lives and property. Still, when the wind blows the smoke away, and the rains tamp down the flames, it can be easy to forget their heroic efforts on our behalf.
Here at Coast Fork Brewing, though, we’re doing our own small part to remember and honor them. Brewer Stephen Mathys has created a fresh-hopped brew that’s perfect for the season, and proceeds from its sale will benefit the Forest Service’s wildland firefighters.
Our Green Shield Fresh-Hopped Ale, which (as is often the case here) draws its name from an English classic, Worthington White Shield, uses 100 percent Amarillo fresh hops in the kettle and in the hop back, and it’s also dry-hopped in the tank.
“This beer’s so pungent, so aromatic,” he said of Green Shield. “It’s not bitter at all, but there’s so much hop flavor. It’s great to have the opportunity to use fresh hops this time of year.”
Mathys has brewed three kegs for a limited release, and all proceeds benefit the firefighters.
“We’re using this as an opportunity to thank these folks, because they’ve obviously had a pretty bad year – again,” Mathys said.
So we’re inviting area hop-heads to grab a Green Shield today and honor those who work so hard to fight the flames.
